On August 4th, 2010 at 2:00pm Google announced it will cease the development of their product Google Wave. Apparently, it has not had the user adoption that they would have liked to see.
I first used Google Wave a little less than a year ago. I was overly excited about the way it would make collaboration and communication easier and thought it would be a good benefit to our production team. After testing it, my excitement fizzled. As a user of Yahoo Messenger, Google Wave didn't offer anything that made me want to change.
Hopefully, we will continue to see some Google Wave features in the future. Google said, "We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product..." Does this mean we are going to see it in gmail or android? That would be nice.
In addition, Google reminded us that, "The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source..." As a person in love with Drupal, I would like to see central parts of Google Wave utilized in a Drupal module. That would be awesome.
Well, good by Google Wave. It was a good show.
