Crazy But Thoughtful Post On Craigslist!

Now, I live and Hawai'i, and as I was reading Craigslist I came across this post:

The original poster is correct. These prices are absolutely ridiculous. Another poster mentioned that he was a lazy okole because he didn't work 90 hours a week...wth? Truth is these rents are totally unsustainable and so are the home prices. MOST of Hawaii took out 5/1 arms and the reason that we don't have massive foreclosures is because the people that bought at ridiculous prices haven't had their arms reset yet. If you want to know what happens when they do, just take a look at Florida, Arizona, Las Vegas, and California. Stable pricing requires incomes that match at 30% of income. Right now a lot of the rents people are trying to get for their over bought homes is 80-125% of average income. Sorry it ain't gonna happen. The boom is going bust quickly and the best chance you have if you bought is NOT to drain your chapter 11 protected 401k or SEP to keep it going a bit longer, it is to foreclose, take the hit and save for the next 3-4 years until prices are inline with income again. If you can figure out a way to do it, stash some cash in the interim. For renters the best thing to do is to move to the mainland (yes that's right). Sorry to have to say it, but this is complete insanity and now that the mainland is busting you can get cheap $500 a month 2 bedrooms in Vegas. You are spending yourself silly and for what? When do you even get the CHANCE to go to the beach and enjoy the islands???? Go out there, save money, let the people that paid too much go bust (which is GOOD for them in the long run too...later they can buy something that 40 hours per week can afford..with extra for vacations and health care too).

You may not like what I am saying now, but until prices get back in line with income, it is a lost cause.

Oh by the way, just because you over paid on the house you are leasing from the bank, doesn't mean that renters will be able to afford to make your whole or even part of your ridiculously large mortgage payment. It is a matter of supply and demand and there is now too much supply and too little demand. Best choice is to try and start over at a later date.

Night folks. Hope you know how to make the right decisions.

I found this post provoked a lot of thought. Some points just might be the answer. I once thought should we help bring the price of rent and homes down by reducing the amount of renters and buyers. Truth be told, the renters do have the power to lower the price of rent even if there are more renters than rentals. This post brought the idea of removing a large group of renters. I don’t know if that is the answer, but it does bring room for thought. Maybe if renters could unite and refuse to pay the ridiculous prices we would have more control!

After a quick search for Hamilton Sundstrand on google, I was not impressed with the generic letter I received. The Hamilton Sundstrand appears to be a legitimate company. And they probably are. I searched through their site and found a job posting for a Human Resource Manager. The job is located in Michigan City, IN. After looking over the requirements for this job:

10+ years of experience with BA/BS degree
7+ years of experience with MA/MS/MBA degree
4+ years of experience with PhD

10+ years of experience with BA/BS degree
7+ years of experience with MA/MS/MBA degree
4+ years of experience with PhD

I quickly realized, “I do not have the experience for a job like this.” Then why are they e-mailing me about this position? Let see, I never worked in human Resources.

There are many reasons why they may have e-mailed me about this position. The biggest reason why they are contacting me may have to do with the fact I don’t have the level of education or experience for the position. When we look at the information they are collecting from me at the down load section, it is clear that there is no specific relation to the position I would be applying for.

network careers

The screenshot above displays the field they require me to fill out. Now, I did not go past the first page because they do not posses a terms of service or privacy statement. However, the main form asks for basic contact information, education, desired salary, and cell phone provider. They also provide a section to upload a resume. However, there is no place to upload a cover letter.

When I compare this e-mail to others I have received, it is apparent that they are collecting the same information as a ton of others possible fake e-mails that I receive.

There is a little box that is pre-selected that states, “In addition to email and phone, please text message me updates regarding my application.” Many people forget to unselect these boxes. The big question is, “once these text messages start, how do we stop them from coming?”

Lets stay away from these e-mails if we do not trust them. By the way, the sender of the e-mail never stated who she works for. Sure we find out when we visit the site. But wouldn’t it be nice to know who Networked Careers is? Besides it seems that Jennifer Frost contacted me about this same position. Jennifer is associated with resumes verified. The application form at their website was the almost the same as this one.

Who are these people and what do they have in common?

I believe it is time to compose a list of people that have been acquainted with a chain of recruitment e-mails that make me question their authenticity. I believe this because :

  • lack of terms and conditions on their so called application
  • the lack of a signature block in their e-mails
  • recruitment e-mails to jobs that are not in my career field or related to the resume they apparently read.

Let look at these names and companies

Are Recruitment E-mails Validating Your E-mail For Spammers?

Today, I wanted to discuss 2 of the latest e-mail that I received. Now, I am not going to go through each item like the other e-mails I have wrote about. The purpose of this post is to expose these e-mails as one of many false employment recruitment letters designed to validate your e-mail address.

Here is the first one:

Dear #name,

I am contacting you on behalf of our client, Hamilton Sundstrand, who has an immediate opening for a Human Resources Manager. I reviewed your resume online and I think you have the qualifications they desire in an applicant, and I’d like to invite you to apply.

You will have the opportunity to lead and facilitate change through the use of consultation skills and strategies. Also, you will be responsible for creating and instilling various processes and programs, such as employee compensation, performance management and talent acquisition/retention.

An excellent benefits package and competitive salary will be offered to the right candidate.

I do not wish to be considered for future employment.

The writer of this e-mail was pretty creative. However, it follows a repetitive pattern that can be seen across many scam recruitment letters. The main intent of this e-mail is to persuade you to click on the employment link. The link is what I want to talk about today.

The base URL is: http://resumesveriverified.com/
The Company that is attempting to recruit us is from careers@veriresume.com. It is obvious that they are attempting to send us to a different website than the companies real website.

What I am looking at though is the common thread. I have found that your e-mail address is often included in the link that they want you to click on. In this e-mail it can be found in this section: cmanager.aspx?email=YOUREMAIL@YOUREMAILCLIENT.com&

There are a few possible reasons for this, but there is one that I want to talk about. It is known that spammers insert a link in their e-mails that supposedly removes you from their list. However, these links often confirm your e-mail address and result in more spam. (and I consider these e-mails spam because I did not contact these comapnies to look for employment for me)

The link that leads you to the application may be validating your e-mail address as well. After observing multiple e-mails, a pattern has become very apparent. It seems that almost all if not all of the e-mails include my e-mail address within the URL.

This is another e-mail I recently received:

Dear #name,

Your on-line resume is impressive. I have a job in mind that matches your qualifications. Please accept this invitation to apply for the position of Virtual Recruiter for our client, Career Path Consultants, Inc.

Career Path Consultants, Inc. employs Virtual Recruiters/Sales professionals within the Permanent/Direct Hire level of staffing. They promote a family- friendly work schedule in an environment that allows their team to be more focused, energized and motivate, with an opportunity to achieve greater success.

A Virtual Recruiter builds new business and maintains professional relationships with clients. Career Path Consultants needs someone with recruiting experience and preferably a bachelor’s degree. A degree is not required. However, they do want a self-motivated, task-driven, independent worker.

If this offer interests you, please click on the link below, fill out the application and send it in. If the link is disabled, just copy and paste the address into your browser for Web page access.

You can expect to be contacted one or two business days after submitting your online application. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

AJ Archer

Notice how this e-mail includes your e-mail address in the URL as well. I have removed my e-mail address from this post because I don’t want to make it too easy for spammers in the cyber world. I have replaced my e-mail in the url with: YOUREMAIL@YOUREMAILCLIENT.com.

If I were to click on the link to begin the application, I could be verifying my e-mail address. The result will lead to more of these e-mails being sent to me whether I fill out the application or not. Often-Once you validate your e-mail, you will continue to receive spam e-mails. This is why it is important not to click on a link in an e-mail if you do not know the sender.

I would suggest keeping a separate e-mail address when you post your resume online. This will help funnel spam mail to a central e-mail address that you do not have to check as often (depending on how hot your job hunt is), and you can quickly find the legitimate job offers/recruitment offers without jeopardizing your personal e-mail address to scams like this one.

Will Hawaii Be Able To Hang With Nevada?

Today the undefeated Rainbow Warriors, as they were once called, take on a struggling 5-4 Wolf Pack. The big question is whether or not Colt Brennan will play. It has been reported that he has been cleared. Then again ESPN went both ways on this topic yesterday. Hawaii is only a 7-point favorite. Maybe, that’s because we don’t know if they will be able to put up the passing yard with out their star player.

The key factor in this game is home field advantage. Nevada's defense plays much better at home surrendering 26.7 points as opposed to 44.6 on the road. Currently, Nevada is a 32% underdog against a team the played their first real game of the season last week against Fresno St..

If Nevada can control the ball on the ground, You expect a close game. Nevada has put up a respectable average of 231.4 rushing yards per game. On the other side of the field, Hawaii has only averaged 80.3 rushing yards per game even though they are third in total offense (534.3). The Warriors have averaged 454 passing yards per game. However, there is a slim possibility that their passing game may suffer if Brennan does not play.

I would expect Colt to play and Hawaii should cover the spread. Nevada has not faced an offense like this all year and may have trouble handling what June Jones brings to the table. The Wolf Pack will probably find their game plan being thrown for a loop against a Hawaii team that averages 13 points in the first quarter and 26.7 by the half. The Warriors should be able to cover the 7 points with or without Colt. Tyler Graunke should be able to fill the role in his absence.
